Change How the Desktop Icons Look

Learn how to change how the Computer, User’s Files, Network, Recycle Bin, or Control Panel icons look in Windows 7.

How to Change how Windows 7’s Desktop Icons Look

  1. Right-click an empty space on your desktop and then select Personalize.
  2. Select Change desktop icons in the left column of the Personalization window.

  3. Select an icon and then click the Change Icon button.

  4. Pick a new look for the icon and then click OK.

    Note: If you have your own custom icons, click Browse, navigate to them, and then select the icon of your choice.

Now my Computer icon has a big red X instead of a computer.
