Free Up Space Used By Backup and Restore

Reduce Space Used by Backup and Restore

  1. Open the Control Panel in the Start Menu.
  2. Open Backup and Restore in the Control Panel.

    Note: If Backup and Restore is not available, change View by to Large icons at the top right of the Control Panel.

  3. Click Manage space in the Backup section of the Backup and Restore window.

  4. First we’ll free up space taken by you data files (documents, pictures, so on…). Click the View backups button in the Data file backup section.

  5. Select a backup period to delete and then click the Delete button.

  6. Click Delete in the confirmation window.

  7. Click Close when it’s finished.

  8. Click Close in the backup periods window.

  9. Next we are going to set Backup and Restore to only keep the latest system image (backup of your programs and settings). Click Change settings under System image.

  10. Select Keep only the latest system image and minimize space used by backup and then click OK.

  11. Click Delete in the confirmation window.

    Note: If you’re just looking to temporarily free up space, I would go back to step 10 and set it to let Windows manage space used for system images after it deletes the old system images.
