^^^I tried Daniel's suggestion but to no avail. A certain program I had been using was still being stubborn and wanted to update itself when I didn't want it to.

So to conclude, I tried:

-The suggestions in this article
-Blocking it in Windows firewall's Ingoing AND Outgoing rules
-Blocking it in my anti-virus

My solution?

By going to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" (Using Windows 7 x64) and editing the "hosts" file with notepad and adding this at the bottom of the list:

e.g.

127.0.0.1 maximumpcguides.com
127.0.0.1 www.maximumpcguides.com
(The universal code for blocking any site is "127.0.0.1")

This did the trick for me in blocking the program and stop it from updating, a.k.a stop it from "calling home".

Hope this helps someone.

This doesn't work because the instructions are wrong. That dialogue is specifically only to *allow* Internet access for programs, not deny it. If you uncheck the checkbox to the left of the program name, what you are doing is not blocking the program from accessing the Internet, but deactivating the rule you just created that allows it to. So effectively, you have created a new rule and immediately disabled it.

The only way to block a program is to go through Advanced Settings (instead of "Allow a program or feature..."), go to Ingoing or Outgoing rules, click "New Rule..." to the right, and follow the steps. In specific: create a Program rule, choose your program, choose to block connections, and name the new rule.

Hiya!

Some applications are extra sneaky and install additional executables that launch at the startup of windows or run as a service. You should find and block these additional exe files.
Use ´msconfig.exe´ to find and disable apps that startup at systemboot.

Another (easier) way of avoiding the unwanted 'phone home' is to install and run your application in a sandbox environment. Download a free sandbox at http://www.sandboxie.com/

You can configure specific rules for your sandbox. These rules include en/disabling Internet access for anything running inside your sandbox.

Good luck & cheerz,
