Prevent Changing the Desktop Background

Learn how to prevent someone from changing the desktop background in Windows 7.

Prevents users from adding or changing the background design of the desktop.

By default, users can use the Desktop Background page in the Personalization or Display Control Panel to add a background design (wallpaper) to their desktop.

If you enable this setting, none of the Desktop Background settings can be changed by the user.

Prevent Changing the Desktop Background

  1. Type gpedit.msc in the Start menu’s search box and then press Enter.

    Note: This guide shows you how to make changes to Windows 7 using Group Policy. Group Policy is not available in Home versions of Windows 7.

  2. Navigate to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Control Panel, and then select Personalization in the left column of the Group Policy editor.

  3. Double-click Prevent changing desktop background in the Settings section of the Group Policy editor.
  4. Select Enable and then click OK to save the changes.
