Learn how to prevent someone from changing the desktop icons in Windows 7.
By default, users can use the Desktop Icon Settings dialog in the Personalization or Display Control Panel to show, hide, or change the desktop icons.
If you enable this setting, none of the desktop icons can be changed by the user.
Prevent Changing the Desktop Icons
- Type gpedit.msc in the Start menu’s search box and then press Enter.
Note: This guide shows you how to make changes to Windows 7 using Group Policy. Group Policy is not available in Home versions of Windows 7.
- Navigate to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Control Panel, and then select Personalization in the left column of the Group Policy editor.
- Double-click Prevent changing desktop icons in the Settings section of the Group Policy editor.
- Select Enable and then click OK to save the changes.
