What does the ActiveX Installer (AxInstSV) service do?

ActiveX controls need administrative privileges to be installed. Many corporate networks don’t allow users to have administrative privileges for security reasons. The ActiveX Installer (AxInstSV) service is used by network administrators to install ActiveX controls for users that don’t have administrative privileges.

ActiveX Installer (AxInstSV) service details

  • Service name: AxInstSV
  • Description: Provides User Account Control validation for the installation of ActiveX controls from the Internet and enables management of ActiveX control installation based on Group Policy settings. This service is started on demand and if disabled the installation of ActiveX controls will behave according to default browser settings.
  • Path to executable: C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k AxInstSVGroup
  • Startup type: Manual

Does my computer need the ActiveX Installer (AxInstSV) service?

Your computer doesn’t need the ActiveX Installer (AxInstSV) service. If this service is disabled the computer won’t be able to install ActiveX controls if the users doesn’t have administrative privileges.

Should I disable the ActiveX Installer (AxInstSV) service?

First off, I have to say that it’s best to leave service optimization up to Microsoft. With that said; if your computer is not part of a corporate network (domain) I don’t see any reason why you need this service.
