If you’re using a laptop and you don’t mind using a little more of your battery to speed up your laptop this guide shows you how to increase the processor’s maximum performance state in Windows Vista.

Many laptops maximum performance state is throttled back at 50% to enable longer battery usage. This only lets the processor use half of its total computing power at most. If you’re willing to shorten the amount of time your battery will last you can turn the throttle off and let the processor do its thing full blast.

Adjust the Processor’s Maximum Performance State

1. Type power in the Start Menu’s search box and select Power Options from the search results.
2. Click Change plan settings under the power plan you’re currently using.
3. Click Change advanced power settings.
4. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable to unlock the settings in the Power Options window.
5. Expand Processor Power Management.
6. Expand Maximum Power State.
7. Adjust the percentages for On battery and Plugged in to 100%.
