Create A Custom Emoticon For MSN Messenger

Learn how to create a custom emoticon for Live Messenger.

Are you tired of sending the same old smiley faces to your friends on MSN Messenger? Would you like to send a custom emoticon like a blue smiley face instead of a yellow smiley face to a friend? This guide will show you how easy it is to create and use custom emoticons on MSN Messenger.

This guide assumes you’re using MSN Messenger 7.5+.

First of all you’ll need an image that’s 19 x 19 pixels in size. I’m going to use the emoticon I found using Google shown below.

You can use the image above by right-clicking it and selecting save image as. Save the image in a place you can easily find it later.

First open MSN Messenger to its main window. The main window is where you can see all of your contacts. Click tools then click My Emoticons. You should see a window similar to the one below.

Click the create button. You should see a box similar to the one below.

Click find image. You’ll see a window similar to the one below.

I navigated to where my icon was saved and selected that file in the image above. Once you do that, click open. After that you’ll see a box similar to the one below.

Now you’ll need to type your keyboard shortcut. Your keyboard shortcut is what you type while you’re chatting to send that emoticon. I typed !mmm for mine. When you’re finished with that, click OK. Now you should see a box similar to the one below.

Notice how your new emoticon is highlighted. Press OK to close that window.

Now open a new chat window and type !mmm or whatever you selected as your keyboard short cut and send that message. If you did it right your emoticon you just created was just sent.

Things to remember:

If your image is not 19 x 19 pixels it might turn out distorted when being sent.

That new emoticon you just created is stored on the computer where you created it on only. If you logon to another computer where that emoticon has not been installed, it won’t show be there when you try to use it.
