Folder Basics

Learn how to create, delete, rename, move, and copy folders in Windows Vista.

Create a New Folder

Navigate to where you want to create the new folder.  Right-click in the empty space in the location you want to create the new folder, point to new in the menu that pops up, and select folder.

A new folder with the name New Folder will appear with the name New Folder highlighted.  You can give the folder a new name by typing the name while New Folder is highlighted.  Once you have typed its name, press enter on your keyboard or click anything other than the folder to save its new name.

Delete a Folder

Deleting a folder can be done a few ways.

You can select the folder and press delete on your keyboard.  You can also right-click the folder and select delete in the menu.

When you delete a folder Windows asks you if you want to place the folder in the recycle bin.  Always choose yes.  The recycle bin holds deleted files in case you want to un-delete them later.

Rename a Folder

There are a few ways to rename a folder.

Click the folder with your left mouse button once, pause for a second and click it again.  The folder name will become highlighted then you can type the new name of the folder.

You can also right-click the folder and select rename.  The name of the folder will become highlighted.  Type the new name and press enter on your keyboard or click anywhere outside the folder.

Move a Folder

Moving a folder can be done a few ways also.

The easiest way is drag-and-drop the folder from its original location to its new location.  To do this open the folders current location and open the folders new location in a separate window.  Click the folder with your left mouse button and hold the left mouse button down.  While holding the left mouse button down, drag the folder from its current location to its new location.  When the folder is hovering over its new location let the left mouse button go to drop it.

You can also move a folder by right-clicking it and selecting cut.  Navigate to the new location, click in an empty space and select paste.

Copy a Folder

Right-click the folder you want to copy.  Select copy.  You can also select the folder then press CTRL+C on your keyboard to copy it.

To paste the folder in its new location navigate to the new location and right click in an empty space and select paste or press CTRL+V on your keyboard to paste the folder in its new location.
