Warning: Editing the registry can harm your computer if not done properly. Use this guide at your own risk. Create a system restore point ^[1] to back everything up to be safe.

Note: Changing the listening port of Remote Desktop will probably stop Remote Assistance from working.

Change Remote Desktop’s Default Listening Port

1. Open the registry editor by typing Regedit in the Start Menu’s search box, right-click regedit in the search results and then select Run as administrator.
2. Using the arrows to the left of each folder in the left pane of the registry editor navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, System, CurrentControlSet, Control, TerminalServer, WinStations, and then select the RDP-Tcp folder.

3. Double-click the PortNumber value in the right pane of the registry editor.
4. Change Base to Decimal and type the new port number in the Value Data box.

5. Click OK to save the changes.
6. Restart your computer.

Note: If you have a firewall you might need to open the new port so that Remote Desktop works.
