Stop 0×1E or KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Posted By Brent Trahan On September 9, 2008 @ 9:54 am In All, Troubleshooting, Vista, Windows | No Comments

This default Windows Vista error handler typically intercepts problems if error-handling routines are not present in the code itself. The Stop 0×1E message indicates that the Windows Vista kernel detected an illegal or unknown processor instruction.

Resolving the Problem

Before you can fix this problem you need to figure out what caused it. Did you recently install new software or hardware? This will help out a lot when troubleshooting the problem.

  1. Stop 0×1E messages typically occur after you install faulty drivers or system services, or can indicate faulty hardware or IRQ problems. If the Stop message lists a driver as the cause, roll the driver back to a previous working version [1].
  2. If the Stop message mentions Win32k.sys the cause of the problem might be a third-party remote control program. If this is the case try starting the computer is safe mode [2] and uninstalling the remote control software. If that doesn’t work, try using the startup repair tool [3] to manually delete the system service file that is causing the problem.
  3. Other possible causes are lack of hard drive space while installing an application or performing certain functions that require more memory than you have. Try running Disk Cleanup to free up space and use the msconfig [4] tool to stop unnecessary programs from starting when Windows Vista boots up to free up memory.
  4. Problems can also be caused by system firmware incompatibilities. You can resolve many Advanced Configuration and Power Interface problems by updating to the latest firmware.
  5. The problem might be caused by a memory leak caused by an application or service. Try using Poolmon.exe [5] to isolate the problem application or service.
