Transfer Your Files and Settings from XP to Vista by Burning Them to CD or DVD Using Windows Easy Transfer

Transfer the Files from Your Old PC

  1. Place a blank CD/DVD in your computer’s CD/DVD burner or your USB flash device in a USB port.
  2. Open Windows Easy Transfer on your old XP computer by going to Start, All Programs, and click Windows Easy Transfer. You can download Windows Easy Transfer from Microsoft [1].
  3. Click Next in the Windows Easy Transfer welcome screen.

  4. Click Use a CD, DVD, or other removable media.

  5. Click CD. DVD might show up if you’re using a blank DVD. You could also use a large USB flash drive as well.

  6. Select the drive you want to use, type a password to protect this transfer, and then click Next. Note: The password is not required.

  7. For simplicity purposes lets click All user accounts, files, and settings.

  8. A summary of all of the user accounts, files, and settings are shown. Click Transfer to start the transfer.

  9. The transfer process will now begin.

  10. Click Close when it’s finished transferring the data to the CD\DVD or USB flash drive.

If you need to burn more than one CD/DVD make sure you number them in the order in which you burn them.

Transfer the Files to Your New PC

  1. Place the first CD\DVD or USB flash drive in your new computer.
  2. Open Windows Easy Transfer by going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and open Windows Easy Transfer.
  3. Click Next in the Windows Easy Transfer welcome screen.

  4. Click Continue a transfer in progress.

  5. Click No, I’ve copied files and settings to a CD, DVD, or other removable media.

  6. Select On a CD or DVD or On a USB flash drive depending on where your data was saved.

  7. Select the drive Windows Easy Transfer will import your data from, type the password you set (if any), and then click Next.

  8. The transfer will begin.

  9. In order for the old data to be transferred from the old to the new computer you need to match up or create new user accounts on the new computer.

    Either select an existing user account from the drop down list on the new computer (right side) or type a name to create a new user account to match each old user account to new user accounts on the new computer. The names of the user accounts don’t need to match up. Click Next when you’re finished.

  10. Click Transfer to start the transfer.

  11. Click Close when the transfer is complete and then restart your computer.
